Weymouth to welcome steam train

Weymouth

A HERITAGE locomotive is due to steam into Weymouth on Saturday 8th April. The Royal Wessex charter from West Sussex, is due to arrive at 12.35pm and is the resort's first steam train of the season.

In charge is expected to be West Country Class No. 34046 Braunton, which has been masquerading as Battle of Britain Class no. 34052 Lord Dowding, renamed to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.
Passengers will have a few hours at the coast before the train heads out again, hauled by a diesel locomotive, at 4.35pm.
The trip has been organised by the Railway Touring Company which runs regular steam excursions to Weymouth in the summer.
The Royal Wessex recalls the days of named steam trains from the 1950s on the former Southern Region. Passengers have ample time in Weymouth to visit the beach, shops and local attractions.
