A Four Day Working Week
So we enjoyed an extra day off last weekend for Spring Bank Holiday, but what are the pros and cons of doing this on a more regular basis?
The commonplace working week is "9 'til 5" five days per week, but would it be better to do "8 til 6" over a four day week?
One more day to your weekend or maybe a day off mid-week, what are the positives?
- More Leisure time
- Lessen the cost of childcare
- A quieter office for those who do a longer day
- Fuel savings / Travel Costs from not travelling in rush hour
- Promotes family time
- Promotes happiness
- For the company - less energy costs, lower catering costs if provided
What is the flip side to this, the negative impact of a four day week
- A longer day can create more fatigue, which in turn leads to stress and an impact on health and wellbeing
- Cramming work in can lead to burn out
- Less effective workforce due to tiredness
- Fitting in a 10 hour shift on the 4 working days; contact with children etc
- Picking up workload of a person who is off
What we would really like is a four day week with 9-5 hours like the Spring Bank Holiday!
