Heart of the City - Bargate Quarter

Romsey

The site including the former 1980s former Bargate Shopping Centre is set to be transformed following the resolution to grant planning permission on 10 January 2017.

Demolition is now underway with construction earmarked to be underway early 2018 and the centre due to open in 2019.

The proposals have been guided by the key aspiration of reinvigorating this area to include an avenue surrounded by substantial public space enabling the appreciation of the historic Town Walls and providing retail units, restaurants, 152 apartments and 451 student beds.

This follows extensive consultation and collaborative working with Historic England, Southampton City Council, the local community and organisations such as the City of Southampton Society and Hampshire Chamber of Commerce.

It is anticipated that once fully occupied the residents, students and tourists will generate in excess of £5 million of expenditure in the local economy.

The creation of links from the Bargate monument down to Debenhams and from the parks to East Street is another key component of the site’s transformation. These links through the site will attract visitors and seek to boost trade in this area of the City.
