Dorset Comic-Con and Gaming Festival to return to Weymouth in March

Weymouth

Superheroes, Disney Princesses and Transformers – these are just some of the things people will be dressing up as at the Dorset Comic-Con and Gaming Festival next month.

The event which is back by popular demand will be held at Redlands Community Sports Hub, Weymouth.

This year visitors will be given the chance to meet stars from the cult TV show Red Dwarf and HBO’s Game of Thrones.

Mark Dexter, who played Howard Rimmer in Red Dwarf, will be signing photos at the event, along with Andy Beckwith, who starred in Game of Thrones and Guy Ritchie’s Snatch.

Lisa Clarke of UK Comic-Con and Gaming Festivals said the event is returning to Weymouth following last year’s success.

She added: “Last year’s event was the second Comic-Con we organised and there was such a great reception. Everyone was so happy, it really was a lovely event – so we’re back.”

At the event there will be retro games, store-holders selling collectables, handmade sets and a number of props from TV shows.

One of the biggest parts of the event is cosplay.

Mrs Clarke explained: “This is when someone picks a character, they love from, for example film or television, and they become that character.

“Some people work on their costumes for months and months, designing it from scratch, while others buy their costumes, which is also fine.”

There will be a competition for the best cosplay costume.

Mrs Clarke said: “There’s a winner at every event who then goes on to the final of the UK Cosplay Championships.

She added, This year she is expecting around 1,500 visitors to attend this year’s event, with people travelling from Bournemouth, Southampton and Bristol – it’s not just local people.

“It’s a friendly event, people go to meet other people and cosplayers. It’s very sociable.”

The event will take place on Sunday, March 24 from 10am to around 4pm.
