Real Life Options (RLO) is a national voluntary organisation providing specialist care and support, operating across England, Scotland and Wales. They have over 20 years’ experience in the design and delivery of flexible, innovative, support services to people with learning disabilities, complex support needs and autism. RLO supports 720 people offering them a real choice, a real voice and a real life. They employ more than 1,800 people and deliver 45 major local authority contracts with an annual turnover in excess of £40 million. RLO’s West Midlands regional office is now firmly established at Basepoint in Bromsgrove. Staff teams working principally in Birmingham and Coventry are lead by Divisional Manager, Sarah Sims, based at Basepoint.

Founded in 1992 by David Wandless (Chief Executive until July 2009) and others, with the aim of providing support and care to people with a wide range of disabilities.

Real Life Options provides services for people who are usually referred via their local authority and who need support to maintain and develop their independence.  We work in partnership with people with disabilities – helping them to live the lives they choose and have the opportunities that most people take for granted. We support people who require specialist services and have brilliant success stories about the support we provide.

Transformation of Residential Care Homes (ToRCH)  -  Real Life Options has an exciting project to increase choice and control for the people they support, in collaboration with Helen Sanderson Associates and Tunstall Healthcare.

The TORCH project in Birmingham will be the first project combining multi initiatives to be formally evaluated by an academic body – Birmingham University. Over a two year period, the project will seek to assess how a truly person-centred approach, coupled with the introduction of telecare and Direct Payments, can affect the lives of people with learning disabilities and support the sustainability of long-term service delivery.

Intensive Support Team - To enable Real Life Options to successfully support people with complex needs they employ their own professional Intensive Support Team.

Headed by Chartered Psychologist, Raj Gnanaiah, the team includes both a Speech and Language Therapist and a Dietician; as well as Intensive Interaction practitioners, qualified autism experts and specialists in Behavioural Analysis. They provide support, guidance and training to staff, with the planning, recording, monitoring, reviewing and implementation of change procedures.

Real Life Options is committed to high standards of staff management and development and achieved Investors In People accreditation in July 1997. At the latest regular review, which took place in the spring of 2012, the accreditation was renewed for a further three years and Real Life Options achieved the Investors In People Gold Award, for organisations that go well beyond the usual standard and demonstrate world class best practice.
