Sunflower Competition Winners in Newhaven

Newhaven

The Gardening Club at Southdown Junior School in Newhaven are the excited winners of £250 worth of vouchers for books having grown the tallest sunflower this summer. Six local primary schools took part in the competition sponsored by Basepoint and Mrs Liz Allen’s gardening club nurtured their plant to 1metre 70cms high.

Centre Manager at Newhaven Enterprise Centre, Claire Murray, has visited the school several times and been most impressed with the enthusiasm of the group for growing vegetables as well as sunflowers. “On my most recent visit there was talk of how they could improve on this result next year. We never had the opportunity to grow things when I was at school, I do wish we had as the children appear to get a great deal out of it”. When the school opens in September, Claire and Karen Osborne, area manager, will be visiting Southdown to present the vouchers and congratulate everyone involved.
