Artists wanted for Weymouth mural art trail project
ARTISTS have the opportunity to make their mark on Weymouth as the council issues a commission to produce street art to decorate the town. As reported, Weymouth Town Council, in partnership with We Are Weymouth, has confirmed a new public art project has been launched which will be completed by July next year.
Applications are now being taken for artists who want to design and produce the 10-location street art trail which is hoped will attract residents and visitors and encourage them to explore and enjoy outdoor artworks inspired by the history and culture of the town.
Ten wall spaces have been identified around the town including at Hope Square, Greenhill Gardens, Weymouth Beach, Nothe Gardens and St Thomas Street.
Up to 10 commissions are available for artists to research, design and paint the walls. The collective artworks can be viewed individually but will collectively form a mural trail.
A spokesman for Weymouth Town Council said: "The trail will enhance the visual aesthetics of the existing buildings adding colour and excitement to blank spaces and increasing the footfall and economic benefit for local businesses following the pandemic.
"Ten potential wall spaces have been identified around the town to be used as canvases for new colourful and inspiring painted artworks which will breathe new life and interest into all the chosen areas.
"The designs must have a link to Weymouth and be family friendly."
The appointed artists will be responsible for the research, design and delivery of their mural which may include feedback from public engagement activities run by the council.
A spokesman said: "It is imperative that we get the subject matter and design of the murals right and deliver something that the public will appreciate, enjoy, and have a sense of pride over having in their town.
"To ensure we achieve this a public engagement activity will be conducted that will bring together ideas, stories and input from the public to inform the designs."|
The application deadline is 12pm on September 16 and artists must be available for a site visit on September 30.
