Channel 4 News Pops Up at Basepoint Swindon


On Tuesday, 20th August, Basepoint Swindon played host to Channel 4 News as part of its week of “pop up” shows, which are reporting the nation’s views on the economy

Having sought opinions on the High Street, Channel 4 visited the Basepoint Swindon centre to see how local businesses are faring, and tasked professional tattooist, Tarren Malham of Ruby Lou’s who are based at the centre, to create the #c4newspopup logo.

Rather than etch it onto a melon, as requested by the show, Tarren managed to persuade her boyfriend, Pardeep Dhillon to volunteer and carefully tattooed the logo onto his leg (she used ink that will fade in a week as a favour to Channel 4), as shown on Tuesday’ night’s show.  While views on Swindon’s economy are mixed, Ruby Lou’s is one of the many businesses that are thriving at Basepoint Swindon.  Tarren, who set up Ruby Lou’s in 2011, comments: “After 5 years in a studio on the High Street, it was time to do my own thing and offer tattoos in a more relaxed, friendly arena. Setting up a studio at Basepoint was ideal - not only is it friendly, welcoming and easy to get to, but there is free parking – a real bonus for our customers who can sometimes be in the studio all day.  We’re exceptionally busy, and being here has certainly worked in our favour.”

Basepoint Centre Manager, Lyn Chapman, believes that confidence is returning, although entrepreneurs are cautious, she comments: “We see a variety of businesses here in the centre, and there is an underlying current of optimism.  What I have noticed is that those starting new businesses are really doing their research, which is strongly advisable in order to succeed. We have tried to create an environment that suits flourishing businesses as well as start-ups, with our flexible terms and easy-in, easy-out licenses, and that certainly sets people’s minds at rest.”
